Kōsaku-ji Temple (Ryūunzan Kōsaku-ji)

An ancient temple founded in the Nara period, passing down the teachings of Zen to this day.

Kōsaku-ji Temple, said to have been founded by Gyōki, is a venerable ancient temple designated as a Matsumoto City Special Historic Site. Its temple buildings and stone Buddhas standing quietly at the foot of the mountain, along with the moss-covered approach, convey the weight of history. Beyond the main hall and numerous other temple buildings, historic sites such as a pagoda-shaped stupa are scattered throughout the grounds, allowing visitors to feel the breath of ancient faith. The view of the Matsumoto Plain from the grounds is also beautiful, making it a spot where you can fully enjoy the charm of an ancient temple alongside the seasonal shifts of nature.
