Kimpōzan Ushibuse-ji Temple
An ancient temple deep in the mountains where the spirit of Shugendo lingers
Red and black—two oxen fell here bearing sutras on their backs. From this dramatic legend comes the name "Gofukuji Temple," an ancient temple boasting over 1,200 years of history. Along the approach path, the Ox Hall enshrines statues of the two legendary oxen, warmly welcoming visitors.
The principal image, an Eleven-Faced Kannon statue, is a secret Buddha said to have been created by Prince Shōtoku. Its form can only be viewed once every 33 years. The temple also houses numerous other Buddhist statues designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan, making it a true treasure trove of Buddhist culture representing Shinshū. The powerful dragon painting on the ceiling of the bell tower is also magnificent. Spend a moment here, immersed in the deep mountain silence, touching the timeless history and legend.
