Daianrakuji Temple

A temple standing in a castle town, distinguished by its majestic main hall

This venerable temple has long held the important role of guarding Matsumoto Castle's northeast corner, known as the demon gate. Though it was once abandoned during the Meiji-era anti-Buddhist movement, it was revived through the dedicated efforts of the community.

Particularly famous at this temple is the enormous "Great Straw Sandals" featured at the annual January Great Prayer Ceremony for the Kannon of Evil-Warding.Stepping onto this straw sandal, hand-woven by the head priest and measuring about 14 tatami mats in size, is said to bring blessings for warding off misfortune and ensuring health and strong legs, drawing many worshippers. The principal image, the Dainichi Nyorai statue, is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Matsumoto City and is one of the highlights. Why not visit this temple, which has continuously prayed for the peace of the castle town, and receive its powerful energy?
