Tenpaku Shrine

Four Hundred Years of Faith Guarding Matsumoto Castle's Demon Gate

Tenpaku Shrine stands on the site corresponding to Matsumoto Castle's demon gate. During the Bunroku and Keicho eras, Ishikawa Kazumasa opened the Tenpaku Dojo while constructing the castle, enshrining Hachiman and Inari deities. It was restored during the Toda clan's rule in 1728 (Kyōhō 12), and subsequently underwent successive promotions through the Meiji and Taishō eras to reach its present status. The plaque reading "

Great Tenpaku Twin Shrines" above the worship hall speaks to this shrine's profound history. Feel the spiritual footprints of the castle town at this place of worship, which has protected Matsumoto for four centuries.
