Susuki-mizu Shrine (Usamiya Shrine)

The Water Deity Faith of Usukawa, Woven from Twelve Centuries of History

Susuki-mizu Shrine was granted the rank of Junior Fifth Rank, Lower Grade by the Imperial Court in 867. It enshrines the deity of the Usukawa River, Takeminakata-no-Mikoto, and Susanoo-no-Mikoto, and has long been revered as the founding deity of the Yamabe region. Within its grounds, enveloped by a dense cedar forest, twelve centuries of history quietly breathe. The "Boat Festival

," held annually on May 4th and 5th, is a venerable ritual said to have featured its current nine boats by the Tenpō era. Magnificently carved, two-story wooden boats are boldly paraded along the approach, winding their way as young men chant "Yoi-sa, hoi-sa!" with spirited vigor. The fervent prayers of townspeople for bountiful harvests and household safety continue to be passed down as a spring tradition in Matsumoto.
