Former Yamabe School Building
The Meiji Era's Passion for Education, Architectural Beauty Seen from the Octagonal Tower
Built in 1885, this pseudo-Western style school building was known as the "Shoji School" in contrast to the Kaiti School's "Giyaman School." It served as an elementary school until 1928. Designated a Nagano Prefectural Treasure, it preserves a rare architectural style for posterity.Stepping
inside, the warmth of the old wooden structure envelops you. The timber, weathered by over 130 years, quietly revives the voices and activities of the children who once studied here. The design, featuring an octagonal tower, reveals the dedication the villagers of that era poured into education.Today, as the Yamabe School History and Folklore Museum, it houses exhibits conveying the region's history and culture. Over 130 years after its construction, it still stands as a symbol of the area, preserved in its Meiji-era form. This building embodies a deep commitment to education
. If you visit Matsumoto, please experience the history and spirit that dwell within this structure.
