Shoryuji Temple
A temple founded during the Muromachi period where the history of the samurai still lives on
Founded in the mid-Muromachi period, this historic temple was established in 1583 as the family temple of Lord Ogasawara Nagatoki. Although it was temporarily abandoned during the Meiji-era campaign to abolish Buddhism and destroy Buddhist images, it was later restored and now maintains a tranquil atmosphere as a Zen temple directly affiliated with Eiheiji. The grounds are home to the grave of Yoshiko Kawashima, known as the “beauty in men’s attire,” which serves as a testament to the temple’s diverse history spanning from the early modern to the modern era. Although located near the city center, the temple is enveloped in tranquility, offering a place where visitors can experience the atmosphere of days gone by and the characteristic serenity of a Zen temple.
