Shiogama Shrine
A shrine for good fortune and safe childbirth, guarded by the deity who imparted the wisdom of salt-making
This shrine was established by transferring the deity from Shiogama Shrine, the principal shrine of Mutsu Province. Its enshrined deity is Shiozuchi no Oji no Mikoto, traditionally revered as the god who taught people how to make salt. He is also the god of safe childbirth, learning, longevity, health and safety, traffic safety, and warding off misfortune and bringing good fortune.
Within the shrine grounds, a "bottomless ladle" is dedicated for prayers for safe childbirth, while roadside guardian deities and haiku monuments quietly watch over the people.
