Former Bishop's Residence, Matsumoto City
Matsumoto's oldest rectory in the prefecture
The Old Priest's Residence in Matsumoto City, a treasure of Nagano Prefecture, is a Western-style building constructed in 1889 by French priest Father Augustin Clément. As the oldest surviving priest's residence in Nagano Prefecture, it still retains its original appearance. Stepping
inside, the warmth of the wooden structure envelops you. The solidity and elegance characteristic of Meiji-era Western architecture remain vibrant even after more than 130 years.Light streaming through the windows softly illuminates the aged wood tones, quietly reviving the breath of life from that era. One can imagine the time spent by the French priest in the foreign land of Matsumoto, tracing the traces etched into the walls and floors. Photography is permitted inside, making it a beloved spot for commemorative photos. Admission is free. A precious building
where the spirit of the Meiji era lingers. If you visit Matsumoto, please take the time to experience this historical moment.
