Kawakami Architectural Design Studio

A retro Western-style mansion on the street corner, a renowned Taisho-era architectural masterpiece.

This retro-modern Western-style mansion that suddenly appears on a city corner is an invaluable relic essential to the architectural history of Matsumoto. Built in 1925 as the former Matsuoka Clinic, this design studio was restored and repurposed in 1995. The architect was Sano Teijirō, a disciple of Tateishi Kiyoshige—the master carpenter who constructed the National Treasure, the former Kaichi School. The exterior walls, finished with a "washed-out" technique to mimic stonework, and the delicate relief decorations convey the advanced skills of the plasterers of that era. While now functioning as an active design office, its beautiful exterior is well worth a look. Why not take a detour on your architectural exploration, camera in hand?
