Kaji-machi

A historic street retaining the vestiges of its artisan town past

The old town name "Kaji-machi" (Blacksmith Town) seems to echo with the vitality of Edo-period artisans. True to its name, blacksmiths who crafted farming tools and other implements once lined the streets here, the sound of iron being hammered day and night reverberating throughout the area. Over time, it came to be known by names like "Yamaga-koji," but the memory of this artisan town that produced tools supporting people's daily lives still lives on in this place.

Though now a quiet street, stepping inside allows you to sense the breath of the merchant culture that once thrived in this castle town. Strolling with a historical map in hand, imagining the figures of the ancient artisans, is a delightful pastime.
