Another Hiroshima: The Song of Arirang – Matsumoto Cinema Select Screening
This directorial debut sheds light for the first time on the plight of Korean atomic bomb survivors—estimated to number as many as 100,000 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki—who have been abandoned by the governments of Japan and both North and South Korea.
Beginning in 1965, he traveled through Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and the Chikuho region, unearthing the silenced stories of Korean atomic bomb survivors who had transcended the division between North and South, and published a collection of their testimonies in 1973.In 1985, he traded his pen for a camera, capturing the voices of compatriots suffering from forced labor under colonial rule, “Imperialization” education, discrimination, and atomic bomb-related disabilities, as well as the pleas of Korean atomic bomb survivors who had come to Japan for treatment, thereby sending shockwaves through Japan’s anti-nuclear movement.
