The Song of Arirang: Testimonies from Okinawa – Matsumoto Cinema Select Screening
This is the second installment in a series exploring the true stories of Korean “military personnel” and “comfort women” from the Battle of Okinawa, whose experiences have long been buried in the shadows of history. Like the first, this film is imbued with a spirit of mourning for the dead and a desire for renewal.
In 1989, Park Su-nam moved to Okinawa to conduct interviews about wartime experiences, interviewing over 100 people, including former Korean “military personnel” and Japanese soldiers. The film reveals the massacres committed by Japanese soldiers against military personnel forcibly taken to the Kerama Islands, as well as the tragedy of the “comfort women.”By framing the “comfort women” issue as “sexual violence perpetrated by the Emperor’s army,” this film supported the struggle of former South Korean “comfort women” in the 1990s to hold Japan accountable.
