"The Cremator" Screening at Matsumoto Cinema Select

★Japan Premiere

Winner of the Grand Prix at the 5th Sitges-Catalonia International Film Festival

Prague, Czechoslovakia, on the eve of World War II. Karel Kopfl-Klingler, a cremator at a funeral home, is an ordinary man who loves his family. However, influenced by his pro-Nazi friends and the social climate, he is eventually driven toward a shocking “Final Solution.”

A masterpiece of dark comedy that exposes the terror of totalitarian ideology, it is hailed as director Július Herz’s finest work. Depicting the transformation of an ordinary man into a perpetrator through beautiful yet eerie expressionist imagery, this film captures the “banality of evil” and stands as a landmark masterpiece in cinematic history.
