Matsumoto City Museum Special Exhibition for Fiscal Year 2026: "The Spirit of Travel"
This exhibition introduces travelers who epitomized each era, as well as trends in travel, through a collection of exquisite artifacts and their own words.
On display are items such as the Edo-period “Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō” and “Ino Tadataka’s Original Survey Maps,” as well as works from the modern era depicting railway travel and
“Hatsusaburo Yoshida’s Bird’s-Eye Views,” which conveyed the allure of tourist destinations using unique techniques, as well as postwar “Discover Japan” and
“Annon-zoku,” as well as materials depicting travel trends from various eras, such as *an* and *non-no*.
Furthermore, drawing on the words left behind by travelers who captured travel and Japan through a keen lens—such as Lafcadio Hearn (L. Hearn), W. Weston, and Kaoru Kanetaka—
we explore the timeless values that underlie travel.
The diverse facets of travel on display in the exhibition halls, along with the messages from our predecessors, are sure to awaken your wanderlust.
We invite you to enjoy this “special journey” presented by the Matsumoto City Museum this spring.
