The Arai Family's Wrist-High Gate
Townhouse gates showcasing master craftsmanship
This valuable arm-beam gate remains in Matsumoto Castle town, where samurai residences once lined the streets during the Edo period. The gate's total width is approximately 2.95 meters, height about 2.4 meters, with the passageway for people measuring roughly 1.4 meters—preserving the scale of daily life from that era. Its distinctive structure features arm beams protruding from the pillars to support the roof. While many gates were lost to rebuilding or fire, this is one of the few surviving structures retaining its Edo-period appearance. It's a spot where you can casually encounter history while strolling through the castle town.
