Nishisōbori Earthen Rampart Park
A historic site where the earthen ramparts of Matsumoto Castle’s outer moat remain
This park has been developed as a historic site featuring the remains of an earthen rampart built on the west side of the moat that once surrounded Matsumoto Castle during the Edo period. The rampart, confirmed through archaeological excavations, still retains its original elevation changes, allowing visitors to appreciate the ingenious defensive strategies of the time and the layout of the castle town.The park’s charm lies in its green, earthen slopes and winding paths, allowing visitors to stroll in a tranquil setting while reflecting on history. Information panels are also installed, offering insights into the castle’s structure and function. It is a peaceful spot for a leisurely walk, perfect to visit in conjunction with exploring the town around Matsumoto Castle.
