Matsumoto Folk Art Museum
Craftsmen's artistry converges in the storehouses with their distinctive sea cucumber-textured walls
The Matsumoto Folk Crafts Museum is a facility that displays an extensive collection embodying the spirit of folk crafts within a building featuring a "namako wall and storehouse-style construction."Founded in 1962 by the late Mr. Taro Maruyama, proprietor of Nakamachi's "Chikiriya Crafts Shop," who resonated with Soetsu Yanagi's folk art movement, it is now operated by Matsumoto City. Stepping
inside the namako wall building, the scent of mixed woodland and the warmth of aged timber envelops you.Inside, approximately 800 pieces are on permanent display. Beautiful everyday items, crafted by the hands of anonymous artisans, stand quietly. From Japanese items like water jars, sake cups, lacquerware, chests of drawers, and folk toys, to Korean white porcelain and ceramics and dyed textiles from around the world, diverse cultures are gathered together. As your eyes follow each piece, the spirit of folk art—the "beauty found in everyday life"—quietly resonates. From the second-floor windows, the Northern Alps are visible beyond the vineyards, while the mixed woodland garden welcomes you with nature's seasonal changes. Strolling through the garden is free. A place where
the beauty of anonymous artisans converges. If you visit Matsumoto, please experience the spirit of folk art within this tranquility.
