Tejō Righteous Citizens' Tomb

A memorial site preserving the memory of the Kasuke incident to this day

The Teikyo Righteous Peasants' Tomb was built to mourn the righteous peasants who lost their lives during the "Kasuke Disturbance," a peasant uprising that occurred in the Matsumoto domain during the Edo period. Kasuke and others, who rose up as representatives of villagers suffering under harsh taxes, were executed. Yet their spirit remains etched in people's memories and has been passed down through the generations. Around the tomb stand Jizo statues and memorial pagodas, where even today, people can be seen quietly bowing their heads in prayer. This historic site allows visitors to feel the spirit of prayer rooted in the community and to experience an event that remains in Matsumoto's history.
