One of Japan's premier spots for "eagle and hawk migration"
The Takami Observation Plaza at Shirakaba Pass is one of Japan’s premier spots for observing the migration of eagles and hawks. Located at an elevation of approximately 1,700 meters—about a 20-minute walk uphill from Shirakaba Pass—it offers a vantage point to watch the majestic migration of eagles and hawks soaring through the autumn sky.
The trail leading to Takami Plaza features both steep and relatively gentle slopes. Since both sections are mountain trails, please wear comfortable walking shoes. Along the way, you’ll also find the Norikura Viewing Plaza, where you can enjoy trekking while taking in the magnificent scenery.
Every fall, at peak times, more than 5,000 eagles and hawks pass overhead in a single day. The sight of flocks of various hawk species—such as the Japanese Sparrowhawk, the Japanese Honey Buzzard, and the Eurasian Sparrowhawk—marching across the sky one after another is truly breathtaking.Another unique sight here is the scene of birdwatchers from all over Japan, equipped with high-powered telescopes and cameras, all simultaneously pointing their lenses toward the sky. Thanks to daily fixed-point observations conducted by expert staff, you can learn detailed information about the migration periods and species.
Amid the autumn breeze, as you take in the ever-changing expressions of the sky, you can experience the grandeur of nature’s wild rhythms.
