Depicting Water: Everyday Life in the Edo Period and Rich Forms of Expression

Edo, developed under an urban planning scheme that utilized canals, rivers, and the sea, was a city that prospered thanks to the blessings of water. Water was a constant presence in everyday life, and this is frequently depicted in ukiyo-e prints. Furthermore, water—which is in a state of constant, ceaseless change—served as a subject that inspired artists, giving rise to masterpieces such as Katsushika Hokusai’s *Tours of Waterfalls in Various Provinces*.Furthermore, in the stories popular at the time, water took on diverse meanings, sometimes reflecting the human psyche. This exhibition traces the depiction of water from three perspectives: “Daily Life,” “Form,” and “Story.” We invite you to enjoy the rich world of water—one that is often easily overlooked.
