The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum
Ukiyo-e woodblock prints that speak of 200 years of passion across five generations of the Sakai family
The Japan Ukiyo-e Museum was opened in 1982 to share the precious ukiyo-e woodblock print collection gathered over 200 years by five generations of the Sakai family native to Matsumoto with later generations. The collection also includes nikuhitsu paintings and books of woodblock prints. It spares no effort to preserve, research, and publicly display ukiyo-e as international cultural heritage.
Step inside the building, and you’ll find yourself in the world of Edo, made up of works by Hokusai, Hiroshige, and other masters. From the fine carvings, vividly colored nikuhitsu paintings, and woodblock-printed books, you can trace a current of beauty that transcends time, from early ukiyo-e to modern-day art-print works. The museum’s history of repurchasing excellent works that had ended up overseas tells of its deep passion for ukiyo-e, and you’ll surely find yourself sensing the depth of the culture of Edo.
