Katsura Shigehide Museum of Art
The World of an Artist Captivated by Satoyama Landscapes
The Katsura Shigehide Art Museum stands on a hill overlooking the Northern Alps. It is the studio where the artist moved in 1966 and spent the last 20 years of his life. The museum opened in 2002 on the site of the former studio.
Approximately 25 oil paintings are on permanent display inside. As you trace the artist's depictions of the Northern Alps' ridgelines with your eyes, look out the museum windows to see the same mountains spread out below, changing their appearance with the morning and evening light. The landscapes of the satoyama countryside beloved by the artist and the shifting seasons reach your heart through both the
artwork and the actual view. Feel the gaze of an artist captivated by the beauty of the Northern Alps.
