Matsumoto City Archaeological Museum
A hub for studying the archaeology of Matsumoto City
The Matsumoto City Archaeological Museum displays artifacts excavated from the Jomon period through the Kofun period. Located in the Nakayama district, an area rich in Kofun tombs and Jomon-period sites, it preserves and exhibits the region's valuable
cultural assets.Step inside the museum, and you'll be greeted by over 2,500 clay earrings and the star exhibit: the clay tablet with a human face. Many exhibits aren't confined to glass cases; open displays allow you to observe the texture of ancient pottery up close. At the hands-on corner, you can actually touch Jomon pottery, feel its rough texture, and imagine the lives of ancient people.Experiences like making magatama (curved jewels) and fire-starting, along with a reconstructed Middle Jomon period house outdoors, further spark your imagination about ancient times. Artifacts from the Kobo-yama Kofun (tumulus) offer insights into the Kofun period history of eastern Japan. This is a place
where the door to ancient times opens. It provides a valuable experience to touch the breath of antiquity with family or friends. If you visit Matsumoto, be sure to stop by.
