East Asia Culture City 2026 Matsumoto: A Project by Artistic Director Midori Kurata—“Body and Music ~Karada to Ongaku~”
With Matsumoto Castle, a National Treasure, as the backdrop at night—
A lavish session of body and music woven together by top artists from Japan, China, and Korea!
“Body and Music” is a popular performance series created by Midori Kurata, Artistic Director of the Matsumoto Civic Arts Center, in which dancers and musicians team up to harmonize “body” and “music” in special spaces beyond the confines of the theater.
For this special “East Asian Cities of Culture” edition, we are pleased to welcome Kim Seong-yeon, former Artistic Director of the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company, as a guest artist. Against the backdrop of Matsumoto Castle as twilight falls, artists from Japan, China, and South Korea will present a spectacular performance.
■ Midori Kurata (Dance) × Airagon (Music)
Joining Midori Kurata for this session is Airagon, a musician from Inner Mongolia, China. Drawing on the sounds of traditional throat singing (“khoomei”), which he inherited from his grandfather, and the morin khuur (horse-head fiddle), he will explore resonance with the body.
■ Kim Seong-yeon (Dance) × Marihiko Hara (Music)
Internationally acclaimed musician Marihiko Hara provides the music. Against a backdrop of sophisticated soundscapes, Kim Seong-yeon will unfold a breathtaking physical performance. *Please note: Marihiko Hara will not be performing live.

*The Honmaru Garden of Matsumoto Castle, a National Treasure, is an outdoor venue. The performance will take place even in light rain. Depending on weather conditions, the performance may be interrupted or the venue arrangements may be changed. A decision on whether the performance will proceed in the event of severe weather will be made by 4:30 PM on the day of the event and announced on the theater’s website.
