Chikiriya Craft Shop
A craft shop embodying the traditional beauty of Matsumoto
At this place where the spirit of the Mingei Movement lives on, why not discover tools that will last a lifetime? Founded by Taro Maruyama, the creator of the Matsumoto Mingei Museum, this long-established craft shop continues to embody Muneyoshi Yanagi's philosophy of "the beauty of utility."The shop is filled to the brim with carefully selected pieces from kilns across Japan, such as Oita's Okano-yaki and Shimane's Daisen-gama, alongside Indian batik textiles and bamboo baskets. The charm of the building, originally a wholesaler's office, adds to the experience. From affordable small plates under ¥1,000 to pieces by renowned artisans, these genuine crafts—which grow more beautiful with use—will enrich your daily life, regardless of price.
