The Buddhas of Jūōdō Temple in Eza-chō
Statues of the Ten Kings conveying the judgment after death
The Jūō-dō Hall in Eza-machi enshrines various Buddhist deities, including the Ten Kings who judge the deeds of the deceased in life, as well as statues of Jizō Bosatsu and Kannon. These Buddhist statues have been preserved and passed down by local people since the Edo period, who prayed for the repose of their ancestors and peace in the afterlife. Despite being located in the town center, a quiet atmosphere of prayer pervades the space, allowing one to sense how faith has lived on right beside daily life. The various Buddhas gathered in this small hall are precious reminders of the folk faith of Matsumoto's common people, preserved to this day.
