Taishō Pond

The landscape carved by the fury of Yakedake, A breathtaking water mirror

Taishō Pond was born overnight in 1915 when the Azusa River was dammed by mudflows from the massive eruption of Yakedake Volcano. As a symbol of Kamikōchi, it continues to be the first sight to greet and enchant visitors, alongside the Hotaka mountain range.Though the number

of dead standing trees has decreased since that time, standing on the lakeshore reveals a fantastical landscape before your eyes. The grayed trunks and roots stand as witnesses to nature's fury 110 years ago. The majestic reflection of the Hotaka Range on the crystal-clear surface lets you feel the mountains' very breath.Bustling with climbers since the Taisho and early Showa periods and cherished as a tourist destination, this place is a sacred site where nature's creation and destruction intertwine. A landscape carved by natural forces

. Be sure to visit as the starting point for enjoying Kamikochi.
