Kubota Kōho Memorial Museum
Tracing the Life of Poet Kubota Kōhō
The Kubota Kōho Memorial Museum commemorates the achievements of Kubota Kōho, a prominent poet and scholar of Japanese literature. Built in front of his birthplace from the Meiji era, it introduces Kōho's life and works.
Inside the museum, his handwritten tanka poems, poetry collections, and personal belongings like his pocket watch and playing cards are displayed chronologically. Visitors can trace the evolution of Kōhō's unique style, which captured the subtle nuances of introspective emotions, from his birth in Wada Village in 1877. The birthplace, preserved opposite the museum, remains unchanged from its appearance in 1875 as a traditional Japanese wooden house.Gazing at the old wooden structure, one senses the deep affection for his hometown that Sōho carried in his heart. Following the exhibits with your eyes and touching the personal belongings, the figure of a literary figure emerges—a man who lived 91 years in Tokyo yet always held his hometown close to his heart. A place where literature
and history intersect. If you visit Matsumoto, please be sure to stop by.
