Sakuraya is a famous local unagi (eel) restaurant and has appeared in several guidebooks. The restaurant has a long history in the city of Matsumoto. Sakuraya’s founder, originally from Toyama Prefecture, began serving sushi and other Japanese dishes in Matsumoto as early as 1920. While you eat, you can admire traditional Japanese pottery collected by the manager.
In the past, the restaurant was often visited by soldiers and politicians, but now many tourists from overseas come to eat here. One of the specialties is the eel steamed in mochi rice wrapped in a bamboo leaf, which is a dish developed by the third generation owner back in the 1980s.
The interior design is simple and light. While you eat, you can admire traditional Japanese pottery collected by the Manager, Okami-san.
