Cattle tethering stone

Stone marking the beginning of the Salt and Candy Market

The Salt Market (later known as the Rain Market) is said to originate from an anecdote during the Warring States period, when Uesugi Kenshin of Echigo sent salt to Kai Province during Takeda Shingen's salt blockade. In the castle town of Matsumoto, the Ox Tethering Stone remains, said to be where oxen carrying salt were tied, conveying the logistics and daily lives of the time to the present day. Beginning with this tradition as its backdrop, the Salt Market changed form over the ages and has been passed down to the present-day Candy Market.
