Oku-Ryoke, Osawa, Tenryu Ward: Bessho Tea Factory – Matsumoto Cinema Select Screening
This ambitious film, directed and edited by Teiichi Hori, reconstructs the “layers of memory” etched into the Osawa settlement—a steep, depopulated area in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Centered on the tea-making process, a local specialty, the film vividly portrays the people’s labor and daily lives through a richly sensory lens.By carefully unraveling the history folded into this narrow mountain valley, the film also highlights the “scars” left by modern Japan—since the Meiji era—on this remote region. As part of a grand five-part epic, it presents a cinematic space-time that is both serene and powerful.
