Announcement of the "East Asia Street" Event in Matsumoto, East Asia Culture City 2026
Matsumoto City has been selected as an East Asian City of Culture for 2026. The main theme is “Arts & Peace.”
This theme embodies the ideal that people around the world will respect each other’s culture and arts and walk together toward peace.
Believing that even a small city can spark a major movement to foster friendship among future generations and further cultural development, we will share our unique culture and our love for peace (PEACE) with the world.
As the opening event, on Sunday, May 17, we will transform the approximately 550-meter stretch from the Matsumoto Post Office to Matsumoto Castle into a pedestrian-only zone during the day and host a market-centered event. We will feature stalls inspired by Japan, China, and Korea as well as East Asia, exciting shops and live performances, an area where visitors can experience Matsumoto’s culture, signature Matsumoto events, and introductions to future events related to the East Asia Culture City initiative taking place in Matsumoto City.
Titled “East Asia Street,” this event is designed to be enjoyed by everyone—from Matsumoto residents to people of all ages, from young to old.
