Exhibition 4: The Birth of Mingei and Matsumoto—The People Who Shaped the Beauty of Daily Life: Hisashi Sawamoto (3rd Generation), Taro Maruyama, Sanshiro Ikeda, and Shamiro Yuzuki

It has been 100 years since the term “Mingei” was coined by Muneyoshi Yanagi and others. Amidst the wave of modernization, this philosophy evolved into a movement that shed light on local crafts across the country, spreading nationwide. In Matsumoto, shortly after the war, the Nagano Prefectural Branch of the Japan Mingei Association (now the Nagano Prefectural Mingei Association) was founded by Hisashi Sawamoto III and Taro Maruyama, and Matsumoto remains known today as the “City of Mingei.”

The fourth exhibition of the 2025 fiscal year at the Matsumoto City Museum of Art will feature works by artists deeply involved in the Mingei movement in Matsumoto, Shinshu.
