There are various theories regarding the origin of the Matsumoto Candy Market. From the early Edo period, a market opening ceremony was held on January 11th. During this event, the priest of Miyamura Tenjin Shrine (present-day Fukashi Shrine), where the market deity was enshrined, began selling salt. This became known as the "Salt Market" and is said to be the origin of today's Candy Market.

Additionally, from the late Edo period, a theory emerged linking the market to the legend of "Kenshin's Righteous Salt." This legend states that during the Warring States period, Uesugi Kenshin sent "righteous salt" to his enemy general, Takeda Shingen. The theory posits that the "Salt Market," held to commemorate January 11th—the day the "righteous salt" is said to have arrived in Matsumoto—is the origin of the "Candy Market."

On the day, events include the "National Candy Expo & Sale" featuring famous and rare candies from across Japan, sales of products from sister city Takayama and Kyushu, the "Salt-Pulling Battle" where teams representing the Uesugi and Takeda armies compete in a tug-of-war, and the "New Year Lottery.""Period Procession," and "Competition between Taiko Drum Groups and Dance Troupes." Furthermore, various events take place within the pedestrian-only shopping district, making it a major New Year event in Matsumoto bustling with many visitors.
