Dear Matsumoto Fans,

One of the things that I really like about living in Matsumoto is that there is always a lot going on, and that is because the city is known to be a city of artists with a lot of creative people who and organize events, art galleries, and gatherings.

The other day, coming back from work, as I was going to my favorite cake shop in Ote Matsumoto, I noticed this art gallery: “Sculpture Skin” by Ito Sumiyo.

This is held on the second floor of an entirely unsupervised building and the entrance is free. You could also look at the sculptures from really close.

I had a fun time walking around the empty building, it was a bit strange but fun.

I later found out that Ito Sumiyo is a female artist born in Nagano City (the biggest city in Nagano Prefecture). When you visit the gallery you can find this portfolio she left for the visitors.

You can find many independent little pop up events like this one in Matsumoto, if you are in the right place at the right time!

More about Ito Sumiyo:
Born in 1982 in Nagano City, she studied sculpture at Musashino Art College and graduated in 2009. From the year of her graduation, she held a number of solo exhibitions in Tokyo. She won several awards for her art, including the “Tokyo Wonderwall Award”.
Currently she lives and works in Yamagata.

Ote is an interesting area in Matsumoto, a bit retro, full of delicious restaurants and interesting shops. It’s right by Matsumoto Station, and I recommend checking it out. I am sure you will have a fun time!
