One of the only two full, fossilized sperm whale skeletons in the world
This museum’s main attraction is the complete, 5.5-meter-long fossilized skeleton of a sperm whale that was found in the Shiga area. Part of the Shiga area is rich in fossils and the whale fossil was actually discovered by a local elementary school student in 1986, prompting the establishment of the Shiga Fossil Museum. The museum is also home to several fossil specimens of fish, shellfish, and plants.
On the second floor, you will find a room full of impressive mounted animals, including bears, birds of prey, lions and other big cats, wolves, and more. There is also a large exhibit of naturally formed gemstones/crystals and seashells.
