Mountain Painters: Shinsei Takei and Tsuruzo Ishii
Shinsei Takei (1875–1957) and Tsuruzo Ishii (1887–1973) were artists captivated by the mountains.
Takei was born in what is now Suwa City, Nagano Prefecture, and embarked on a career as a painter after graduating from the Metal Casting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. In 1900 (Meiji 33), he became an art teacher at his alma mater, Matsumoto Junior High School, where he nurtured many young artists. Throughout his life, he climbed mountains and painted mountain landscapes. Ishii was born in Tokyo and graduated from the Sculpture Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.Afterward, he was active in a wide range of fields, including sculpture, Japanese-style painting, oil painting, watercolor, printmaking, and illustration. In 1906 (Meiji 39), he climbed Mount Asama and was deeply moved by the Japanese Alps; from then on, he went mountain climbing almost every year. Both men were founding members of the Japan Mountain Painting Association, established in 1936 (Shōwa 11).
