Nawate Street

Just 5 minutes from Matsumoto Castle: Nawate Street, with its frog mascot

Nawate-dori takes its name from the long, narrow embankment—as thin as a rope—nestled between the southern moat of Matsumoto Castle and the clear waters of the Metoba River. After Yotsubashira Shrine was established in 1879, the street developed as the shrine’s approach.

The symbol of this street is the frog. The Japanese tree frog, which once lived in the Metoba River, is a species that can only survive in clean rivers. The mascot characters, Metoba and Gouta, stand at the east and west entrances of the street, hoping that the Metoba River will once again become a clean river where Japanese tree frogs can thrive.

A variety of unique shops line the street, ranging from traditional fruit and hardware stores to taiyaki shops, bakeries, ice cream parlors, and general stores.

Since it is a pedestrian-only zone 365 days a year, small children, pets, and people in wheelchairs can all stroll around safely.

Why not take a stroll through the town, visiting Matsumoto Castle and Nakamachi Street?

Shin Shrine

A power spot in Matsumoto Castle Town protected by the deity who governs water

True to its name, this shrine was established to "pacify" the turbulent flow of the Nuregawa River, which once flooded repeatedly. During the Edo period, Matsumoto Castle lord Ishikawa Kazumasa undertook major construction to redirect the river's course to its present route, protecting the castle town from flooding. It is said the shrine was founded at that time as the town's guardian deity. Here, you can receive

divine blessings for protection against floods and disasters, warding off misfortune, and all water-related wishes. Additionally, the shrine grants blessings for encounters, matchmaking, childbirth, safe delivery, and marital harmony. The "Yotsubashira Shrine" and "Shizuka Shrine," standing along the Noto River, are representative power spots of Matsumoto Castle town. Visiting both shrines together will likely bring you even greater divine blessings and protection.

Tsukui Izumi Shrine and the Well

A 300-year-old zelkova tree and crystal-clear spring water

The name “Shimizu” (meaning “clear water”) for this area is said to derive from the spring water found here, reflecting the fact that it has long been revered as a sacred site of water. During the Heian period, a road leading to the government offices is said to have passed nearby, making this a precious watering hole where travelers and officials could quench their thirst.

Within the shrine grounds stands a massive zelkova tree, boasting a height of 25 meters and an age of 300 years, which has been designated as a Special Natural Monument by the city. As the shrine’s sacred tree and a symbol of the region, it has continued to watch over the people alongside the spring water. If you listen closely to the sound of the pure water in the shade of this ancient tree, which evokes a sense of timelessness, you will find a moment of peace and tranquility.
