Jōhōji Alley

A quiet alleyway where the old castle town still lingers

Jōhōji Alley is a narrow lane quietly winding through the streets of Matsumoto Castle town. Its name originates from Jōhōji Temple, a mountain ascetic temple that once stood here, facing the east side of the street. Since the Meiji period, it has also been called "Aburata Alley" after the name of a merchant house at its entrance. Even today, you can sense its charming atmosphere, conveying the breath of daily life. This little-known historical path, perfect for a detour during your stroll through the castle town, offers glimpses into the lives of old townspeople and the lingering traces of the town's original layout.
